Work Started in Flood Plain
Detour signs are up and Contractors are gearing up to raise the streets about 16 inches in the Myrtle Park/Surrey Crescent/Richmond Crescent area. This is a site near Hampton Boulevard with chronic tidal flooding. The nearly $500,000 project is being handled by the City of Norfolk's Environment Storm Water Management Division of the Public Works Department
The goal is to help residents in that area get in and out of their driveways during moderate floods. The project should be completed by the fall of 2011. If you have questions call John White at 823-4000 or email him at stormwtr@norfolk.gov.
Scouts Save Fallen Tree
Boy Scouts from Troop 24 have saved a 15-foot cedar tree in Birdsong Wetlands adjacent to the Larchmont Library. The tree was knocked over by last November's nor'easter. Neighbors had tried several times to pull it upright but failed. On June 19 the Boy Scouts with their leader Chris Melhuish repositioned the tree and used ropes to secure it. The next day a song bird was spotted singing in the top branches.
Watching the Boy Scouts save the tree "made my day," said Merrie Jo Milner, a volunteer at the Birdsong Wetlands. "So many of us have grieved over this fallen tree, and it was such a gift to see."
Patty Edwards, who walks daily through the Birdsong Wetlands, noted: "The tree adds shade and habitat at the water's edger. It is great to know that the Scouts care about nature and our community."
Troop 24 meets at Larchmont United Methodist Church. It was chartered in 1917 and is the oldest troop in the Tidewater Council of the Boy Scouts of America. It has produced more than 115 Eagle Scouts.
